Is getting chilly in November month, my job has come to a close in Taipei. Having stayed on for almost a month, I was one of the last that still remains on site. The job had been hectic and demanding, having to work on odd hours, and borderline violation on health and safety regulations. Nevertheless I was pretty satisfied when I'm able to complete the project and have the handover.
It was the last night, I was alone and and was thinking to go for a small celebration with myself on the completion of the job. Is chilly, and I wasn't in the mood to venture and trying out new places. I had always the fear of the new place being a let down and I only have one meal to go before I leave. Luckily there is a 'Ri Chao 热炒' place just behind the ally way of my hotel. Kuai Chao is a popular choice for Taiwanese, they serve simple, quick, affordable and delicious meal for the salarymen whom had no time to cook at home, as well an avenue to socialize. And usually it operates till late night or even early morning for those whom are working the night job.
Usually, you're spoilt with choices, the menu is clearly written on the wall and clear price stated with only a single portion.
As the weather had turned cold, I was craving for '麻油鸡 sesame oil chicken', is almost a soupy dish, the fragrance of sesame oil, pairing with ginger and stir fried chicken, warms you up. It pairs well with white rice. Is a comfort food for sure.
Mostly the food serves were aim to trigger your appetite, and excite your taste butt. Take this simple stir fried beef with scallion and chili bits, I just couldn't get enough of it. The beef was cook to perfection, tender and juicy, coated thinly with Shaoxing wine, every bite is just a bombardment of taste.
I found nothing mediocre, and I have nothing to complain. Everyone seems pretty satisfied after their meal, and wash it down with Taiwan Gold Medal beer seems to be the way to go, to sent you on your way to a goodnight sleep.
I hope such food culture never dies, like temple such eateries provides a place for someone to seek refuge, salvation and mental solitude. A beer and a meal alone... gives you the time to think through the day and find some closure and be at peace with yourself. Kudos to Ri Chao!
